Cruelty-Free food is the future. This is not only evident from an increase in Vegan food production and consumption over the last decade, but also from the decrease of meat and dairy sales. Plant-based Burgers, mock-meats and protein sources are slowly becoming a mainstream phenomenon in the world. So what's next? 100% cruelty-free lab-grown meat,  no animals killed or harmed.

Lab-Grown meat research and development has been underway in western countries for several years now. And now, it has piqued the curiosity of Indian scientists who have now started working on producing plant-based lab-grown meat. The Economic Times has reported that the well-known animal rights and welfare organization, Humane Society International have joined forces with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad to develop lab-grown meat in India.

Alokparna Sengupta, Deputy Director at HSI India reported that "Internationally, clean meat is predicted to hit the market by the end of 2018. In India, we expect it to be available by 2025,".

"The taste will be the same because clean meat is meat. However, instead of slaughtering an entire animal for the different part of its body, the technology in clean meat can develop those parts based on a biopsy taken from different parts of the animals' body," Sengupta said.

Of course, this ensures the animals are obviously not harmed in any way. It's similar to that of a human blood test. Just a few cells from an animal can be made to multiply and produce meat in large amounts.

Managing Director of Humane Society International, N G Jayasimha told The Economic Times, “Clean meat technology is taking the world by storm with even the biggest meat producers investing in companies developing clean meat. It is time India begins this dialogue”.

The lab-grown meat will not require any antibiotics and produces no bacterial contamination and most importantly ensures that no animals are killed or harmed in the process.

"Clean meat technology is taking the world by storm with even the biggest meat producers investing in companies developing clean meat. It is time India begins this dialogue," said N G Jayasimha.
