Veteran South Indian film actor Karthi’s upcoming film Kadai Kutty Singam might be in trouble as a Rekla race was organized for the shooting without taking a prior permission from the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI).

Rekla Race is a bullock cart race that used to be held during Pongal festival, particularly in Tamil Nadu. In 2014, the Supreme Court had banned Rekla races along with Jallikattu. However, in response to widespread protests which happened last year, an amendment was made by Tamil Nadu State legislature to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 which allowed Jallikattu. Nonetheless, nothing was specified for the Rekla Race.

An application was sent to the AWBI by the production company 2D Entertainment Limited but as stated in New Indian Express, on their official website, the status of application submitted by M/s 2D Entertainment Private Limited seeking pre-shoot permission to use 211 oxen and cows, 48 cocks and 32 avians was ‘not approved’. The board categorically rejected the application and said: “The applicant is informed that Rekla Race is banned by Supreme Court as it is against the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.”

The punishment, for the offender, if convicted will be a fine of up to Rs. 5000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 months.

It’s crucial that the people, the masses consider as role models follow the law and order. We hope the legislation takes required measures for the enforcement of the established laws.
