Usually, when we need to replace paneer while cooking our favourite gravies or in a tandoori dish, we reach out for soybean tofu that’s easily available.

But what if we told you there’s a new kid on the vegan block?

Meet Funny Nani, a plant-based start-up making a delectable vegan paneer alternative.

Two young entrepreneurs, Yash and Aditya, who are biochemical engineers by vocation, have devised a vegan paneer replacement that comes pretty close to the firmness and texture of paneer but tastes even more delicious.

Aditya said, “When I turned vegan, I was bored of the regular soya tofu we were using. We wanted to create something a plant-based alternative that people wouldn’t hesitate to use instead of paneer.”

They spent two years in research and development to make a healthier, lactose-free and cholesterol-free paneer that is made from watermelon seeds!

They use a patent-pending proprietary process to get the perfect texture while still being able to maintain a neutral taste.

TASTE-TESTING FUNNY NANI

We put Funny Nani through some rigorous testing, something we haven’t even done with soybean tofu before.

We wanted to check how the vegan paneer performed when it was cooked and decided to review it based on various parameters.

For this, we use Funny Nani’s paneer in three different dishes – a barbeque, a stir fry, and in a gravy dish.

FIRMNESS:

Funny Nani’s paneer was able to hold shape very well and did not crumble even when we put it through a skewer with other vegetables all the while it still is able to maintain a certain creaminess.

Even in the stir fry and gravy, the vegan paneer held firm.

COLOUR:

Funny Nani’s vegan paneer is an off-white colour and can be used raw in salads.

But it is a real treat if slightly roasted before adding to any dish.

When roasted or stir-fried, the exterior of this vegan paneer turns into a beautiful savoury brown that gives it an appetising look.

TASTE:

While soya bean tofu usually has a slight aftertaste even if it is made with the best quality soya beans, Funny Nani’s watermelon seed paneer is much more neutral and pleasant to taste.

INGREDIENTS:

Funny Nani is a clean label product with just four ingredients- watermelon seeds, starch, salt and sugar.

This makes it a minimally processed product and can easily become a kitchen staple.

In conclusion, Funny Nani’s watermelon seed paneer is a versatile ingredient that is a must-have for those looking for healthy replacements in their daily cooking.

The vegan paneer is able to retain its shape during cooking and can take on additional flavours after marination as well.

It can be easily used in a variety of dishes from tandoors to curries and can even be battered and fried into a pakora.

Funny Nani’s vegan paneer is high in protein, since watermelon seeds contain 31g of protein per 100gms, and is without any lactose or cholesterol. This allows for anyone to be able to enjoy it as a healthy replacement.

You can find Funny Nani’s vegan paneer in Mumbai via the brand, or online. Funny Nani also supplies their vegan paneer to select restaurants like Earth Café and The Green Affair. The vegan paneer will be available in major cities across India later this year.
