Actress and vocal vegan Mallika Sherawat is urging people across India to go vegan! Sherawat has tied up with a US medical non-profit to promote and educate medical students about the benefits of a vegan diet.

Doctors from the Barnard Medical Center and Physicians committee, a US non-profit with 12000 doctor members, will be visiting medical colleges across India this month and the next to teach students the power of plant-based eating.

India has an alarmingly high rate of diabetes and cardiovascular disease and according to doctors, a plant-based diet can help fight obesity, diabetes and heart disease.  Researchers with the Physicians Committee recently published a review that found that plant-based diets can reduce the risk of heart disease by 40 per cent. Additional research demonstrates that a vegan diet can help prevent type 2 diabetes.

Over 72 million people in the country have diabetes and another 42 million have undiagnosed diabetes, as per data from the International Diabetes Federation. And in the next  25 years, that number could cross 134 million and 72 million, respectively. Cardiovascular disease ranks as the leading cause of death in India and statistics indicate that over 60 million years of life were lost prematurely to heart-related diseases in 2016 alone.

“Plant-based nutrition should be the frontline defense against India’s diabetes and heart disease epidemics. It’s critical that we train the next generation of physicians in India and around the world to share this lifesaving message with their patients.”

James Loomis, M.D., M.B.A.

Medical Director, Barnard Medical Center
