UK Bans Boiling Lobsters Alive in Strong Fight Against Animal Cruelty
December 30, 2025
Imagine if you were, without any warning whatsoever, burnt alive in boiling water for no fault of yours! This is the fate every lobster has been suffering in the United Kingdom, until now. The UK government has finally outlawed this outdated practice, ahead of a much-awaited reveal of their National Food Strategy and Farming Vision in 2026.
There couldn’t have been a better end to 2025 for animal rights charities and activists who have been advocating for long to implement more humane practices for crustaceans. It is worth noting that lobsters are one of the most popular items on menus across the country.
“When live, conscious animals are placed into boiling water, they endure several minutes of excruciating pain. This is torture and completely avoidable. Humane alternatives, like electrical stunning, are readily available,” Ben Sturgeon, CEO of the UK’s Crustacean Compassion, said in an interview with The Guardian after the decision was announced.
According to Earth.com, studies in the UK have shown that when the likes of crabs and lobsters came into contact with harsh stimuli, like electric shocks or acids, they would touch the affected area or do what they could to not get into trouble in subsequent encounters. They don’t just have a reflex reaction, but the pain and suffering they endure is the main question here.

The UK has followed the likes of Switzerland, Norway and New Zealand with this law. Interestingly, the previous Conservative government in 2022 had passed a law which categorised crustaceans as sentient beings who felt as much pain as other animals. So the law is an extension of that, which was in turn based on a report by the London School of Economics (LSE).
The Labour government has also announced other laws against animal cruelty, such as humanising fish slaughter, banning puppy farming and hen cages, trail hunting and shooting hares being punishable offences.
Critics will have their reasons to cry foul, even as the government is yet to take strict action against factory farming, which is the main cause of animal cruelty across the world. But one step taken always leads to the next step, as there are always other delicious food choices and alternatives for our taste buds.
