Environmental activists, led by 12-year-old Genesis Butler, have offered Pope Francis $1 million to go vegan for Lent. If he does, the campaign will donate the money to a charity of his choice.

The Million Dollar Vegan campaign is encouraging people to consume less meat and dairy in an effort to fight climate change. Research indicates that animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of environmental degradation, and cutting down on meat and dairy can help.

The petition is up on Change.org and has already amassed over 28k signatures, inching closer to the 35,000 mark.

Why Pope Francis in particular? He has been outspoken about environmental issues in the past, highlighting it in his 180-page 2015 encyclical. Plus, as the leader of 1.2 billion Catholics, he exerts considerable influence globally.

"Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic and political."

Pope Francis

Vegan celebrities like Paul McCartney, Woody Harrelson, Moby and others have already shown their support and sent messages to the Pope. Show your support by signing the petition!
