Netflix has announced the release of a new documentary called Breaking Boundaries narrated by broadcaster and natural historian Sir David Attenborough. Produced by Silverback Films, the documentary will detail the history of human impact on the environment since the beginning of the first human civilizations.

The aim of the film is to bring to light the current state of crisis the world’s biodiversity and ecology is in. The globally-known scientist, Professor Johan Rockström will be laying out the environmental degradation taking place across the globe.

‘Breaking Boundaries’ refers to the way humans have exploited the earth, crossing the limits which have kept the environment intact to foster life. Professor Rockström published a blog post on Netflix, writing:

“As a species, humanity is careening close to the edge. Our impact on nature is bringing us dangerously close to planetary boundaries. These are the thresholds myself and colleagues have identified ranging from climate change and the loss of species to the ozone layer and ocean acidification.”

While the documentary relates the account of the planet in crisis, it has an optimistic view of the future if human beings can mend their actions.

“As a species, as a global civilization, we are now in the driver’s seat. We are the main force for change in the biosphere,” it continues. “But we can raise the drama up a notch. Our children are sitting in the backseat. They are shouting “turn on the headlights.” “Listen to the science.” “This is our future.” Our generation may be the last with the ability to keep our planet within the boundaries we need to thrive and prosper.”

In the trailer, Professor Rockström says:

“What we do between 2020 and 2030: it will be the decisive decade for humanity’s future on Earth.”

The scientist mentions three ways humanity can restore this crisis - by eliminating all greenhouse emissions, protecting wetlands, oceans and forests, and lastly, changing what and how we eat and farm.

On the International Day of Biological Diversity, 18-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg also released a short film linking climate change and pandemics to the way we farm and what we eat.

Sir David Attenborough commented on his participation in Breaking Boundaries, stating:

“With major global decisions on biodiversity and climate change taking place this year there has never been a more important time to communicate the science of what is happening to our planet. The research featured in Breaking Boundaries is one of the clearest explanations I’ve seen of the threats we face and how we might tackle them. I hope that after watching this film many more people will see the urgency of our current situation and be inspired by the possibility of creating a stable healthy future for ourselves and the rest of the natural world.”

Sir Attenborough was also recently chosen as the ‘People’s Advocate’ prior to the UN Climate Change Summit 2021 to discuss the urgency to tackle climate change with world leaders.

Breaking Boundaries has been directed and produced by Jon Clay with executive producers as Alastair Fothergill, Keith Scholey, Colin Butfield, Jochen Zeitz, and Kate Garwood.
