Canadian Government Invests $153 Million In Vegan Protein Development

Canada wants its residents to be plant-powered and they sure are serious about it. Canada’s vegan food segment has been growing and the government is now investing a whopping $150 million in vegan protein development. (That's over a thousand crores!)

It’s big news – a nation directly throwing its support behind vegan alternatives speaks volumes about where our food systems are headed.

The investment comes in the form of a funding agreement between the Canadian government and Protein Industries Canada, a group of businesses and non-profits working together to grow the plant-based market.

The announcement was made by the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

"Canada's advanced and productive agricultural industries have excellent potential for growth given the increasing global demand for plant-based protein. Our government is teaming up with companies of all sizes, academic institutions and not-for-profit organizations to make productive connections and stimulate innovation that will create thousands of good jobs in this and related fields."

The partnership means Protein Industries Canada can work towards helping the nation increase the value of key crops in premium markets and meet the growing demand for plant-based meat alternatives in North America.
