Animals in circuses are now prohibited in France, according to a recent decision by the French parliament. Mink farming is also prohibited under the new animal law, which is a step toward a brighter future for animals. While this is a huge step forward, many people believe it is still insufficient.

While the law has been passed, the ban will be phased in. Performing with wild animals will be prohibited for two years, and keeping such pets will be illegal in seven years. In the next five years, the law will outlaw live dolphin shows and put a stop to mink farming. There is just one remaining mink farming operation in the country, and it will be closed immediately.

While many circus owners have condemned the law, environmentalists argue that it does not go far enough. Those who do not follow the new law will face maximum punishment. Animal mistreatment will result in a punishment of 75,000 euros and up to five years in prison. In addition, France intends to tighten limits on the sale of pets.

“Victory for our animal friends!” tweeted the co-sponsor of the law for Macron’s party. “The National Assembly adopted the bill against animal abuse unanimously minus one vote. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all MPs of all political parties. It’s a fact: animals bring us together.”

While many people applauded this measure, others felt it was insufficient because it did not include a ban on bullfighting. This demonstrates that, despite the fact that the government has identified animals in circuses as a problem, many people continue to accept hunting as a traditional sport. This is also seen as a way to keep the animal population in check.

Speaking about this, Dombreval added, “There will inevitably come a day when… we will debate sensitive issues such as hunting, such as bullfighting, or some animal-rearing practices.” Speaking on this, World Circus Federation Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, who criticized the decision, said, “In the circus, we make people happy, we’re not hurting anyone, but we get picked on. Whereas hunting with hounds, for example, is cruel to deer, horses, and dogs.”
