The mounting concerns about ethics in the cosmetics industry have pushed many internationally-recognized brands to adopt cruelty-free manufacturing practices. In 2019, the cosmetics giant Dove earned the stamp of approval by PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies programme as cruelty-free.

Joining this movement, Garnier yesterday announced that it is officially approved as cruelty-free by the animal advocacy group Cruelty Free International under their Leaping Bunny programme. No Garnier products across the world will be tested on animals anymore.

Cruelty Free International is widely recognized as a credible organization and more than 2,000 brands across the globe are approved as cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny.

The beauty and haircare brand will be ceasing the sales of its products in mainland China, as the Chinese government requires mandatory animal testing for certain cosmetic products to be sold in the market.

The procedure to certify any brand as cruelty-free under the Leaping Bunny programme requires an examination of its entire supply chain, individual ingredients, and raw materials. In the case of Garnier, the 18 month-long investigation involved looking into upto 500 suppliers globally, along with over 3,000 ingredients.

"Garnier is a global brand familiar to us all. To work with them to help end animal testing for cosmetics and declare them officially approved under the Leaping Bunny programme is a real milestone. Garnier's Leaping Bunny approval is an important gear shift for major cosmetics," stated Michelle Thew, the CEO of Cruelty-Free International.

However, Garnier is owned by L'Oreal, and all other brands under L'Oreal still involve animal testing.

Thew added: "Garnier is one of many L’Oréal Group brands that we hope will now move forward for Leaping Bunny approval, solidifying the company’s commitment to a world without animal testing. This is also a big step in the right direction towards meeting our call being led by the European Parliament for a worldwide ban on animal cosmetics testing by 2023.”

Is Garnier Vegan?

While the brand will not be testing their products on animals anymore, some of Garnier's products still include animal products.

However, the brand has been acknowledging the demand for vegan-friendly products and offers certain “vegan formulas”, which do not involve any animal derived ingredients, according to its official statement.
