There's no denying the fact that out of the three macronutrients—fat, carbs, and protein-protein is currently the one that receives the most attention. This important nutrient is popular for good reason. It not only helps you grow muscle and repair tissue after working out, but it also maintains fluid balance, strengthens your immune system, and produces hormones and enzymes, among other things. Perhaps this is the reason why alternative versions of this protein have grown in popularity in recent years. Nowadays, a growing number of people prefer plant-based proteins over traditional proteins derived from animals.

Clearly, there is a growing interest in and demand for vegetarian proteins. In case you are curious about the choices that are available, you should know that it appears, so was former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni. In heartening news, the former skipper has invested in Shaka Harry, a plant-based protein startup.

Dhoni explains the need for protein alternatives

Almost every nation around the globe has a huge and rising demand for alternative protein. Naturally, an expanding CPG market for alternative proteins exists in response to consumer demand for sustainable products as well as the practical necessity for protein that is independent of current agriculture methods. The effects of human habits and how they affect the future of our planet are becoming more well-known, which is why people are veering toward sustainable food choices.

Speaking to the media about the collaboration, Dhoni said he loves chicken but is now aiming for a balanced diet. With Shaka Harry's goods, which come in a variety and offer a healthy alternative to classic meat recipes, it is much simpler, he continued, “We now have a choice to shift to smarter protein alternatives without compromising on taste and texture. The plant protein segment is an exciting consumer space.”

Words of wisdom from the cofounder

“We are serving over 30,000 customers across 10 cities monthly, and expect to triple this number in the next few months. Shaka Harry will also be available on global shelves by the end of this year,” said Anand Nagarajan, co-founder, and CEO of Shaka Harry’s parent company Liberate Foods. Another co-founder Hemalatha Srinivasan said the business currently sells packaged goods. She left open the prospect of a food chain in the foreseeable future.

Better Bite Venture, Blue Horizon, and Panthera Peak Ventures led a seed fundraising round for the firm that developed plant-based mock meat, which got USD 2 million. Furthermore, Manu Chandra, a chef, is one of the company’s other investors.

Other notable celebrities endorsing plant-based meat

Meat substitutes will be necessary since consumer demand is not anticipated to decrease anytime soon. Hence, naturally, new goods are needed in the fight against climate change since animal-based food products have an indisputable negative impact on the environment and animal welfare. The current Indian plant-based protein market is $30–40 million, and it includes startups like Shaka Harry. Around the world, such businesses have attracted celebrity endorsements. Rapper Jay-Z invested in Impossible Foods, and actor Leonardo DiCaprio invested in Beyond Meat.

Closer to home, Virat Kohli, an Indian cricketer, has also invested in the Blue Tribe brand of plant-based meat in India. Whether we like it or not, we will need ample alternative protein sources to take us to a world without animal cruelty. Hence, we must stop using animal products exclusively. Luckily, the market for alternative proteins in the food business is expanding as a result of ventures like Shaka Harry, which is promising news indeed!
