How A Pet Woolly Monkey Triggered Ecuador’s Highest Court To Give Wild Animals Legal Rights

Ecuador has become the first country to give equal rights to animals.

And this is because of a woolly monkey named Estrellita. Estrellita was forcibly taken from nature when she was one month old and she was raised by librarian Ana Beatriz Burbano Proaño for 18 years.

In 2019 Ecuadorian authorities seized the monkey as owning wild animals is illegal and she was sent to a zoo.  Ana Beatriz filed a case in the court that claimed the detention of Estrellita by the authorities was invalid.
