A few years ago, Swedish furniture giant IKEA hardly had any vegan options on its extensive menu. Come 2030, IKEA’s food menus could be predominantly plant-based! This is one of the initiatives the company has pledged to take as part of its goal of becoming planet-positive by 2030.

RISE IN SALES OF IKEA’S PLANT-BASED FOOD

In India, IKEA introduced a vegan guava ice cream last year. The company has also launched vegan hot dogs and meatballs in several stores across the world. In the IKEA Sustainability Report FY 2022, the company states how it kept increasing plant-based food options across its global restaurants and also witnessed a rise in their sales in 2022.

“The share of sales for plant-based food options in IKEA restaurants increased from 14% in FY21 to 17% in FY22. We continue to work toward the goal that 50% of the main meals offered in our restaurants will be plant-based by 2025,” the company said in the report.

IKEA’S NEW PLANT-BASED FOOD HALLS

Apart from adding more plant-based options to their current restaurant menus, IKEA is going to set up beef-free food halls called Saluhall in several countries, including Gurgaon in India, besides China and San Francisco. This was announced by IKEA’s parent company, Ingka Group, as part of its sustainability goals.

The food halls will start with being 80% plant-based, and gradually move towards achieving a 100% vegan menu. The menu will offer Nordic street-style food, such as burgers and ice creams. Jens Neilson, Ingka Centres’ Commercial and Digital Director, said in their official statement, “Saluhall will go beyond dining to inspire many people to make more sustainable food choices, through lectures, cooking workshops and more.”

OTHER SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES

Besides switching to plant-based food, IKEA has also started other sustainability initiatives under its 2030 planet-positive mission, including creating products with renewable and recycled materials, removing all single-use plastic products and reducing the total climate footprint by an average of 70% per product. IKEA has also committed to achieving zero emission home deliveries by 2025 and expanding its affordable home solar solutions to 29 IKEA markets by 2025, the company’s official statement said.

With 650 million customers worldwide, it will be interesting to witness what further initiatives IKEA adopts to become a climate-positive company by 2030. As for Indian consumers who are trying to make more conscious and sustainable choices, the plant-based offerings are going to keep getting bigger and better at IKEA.
