In a move that marks a turning point for India’s sustainable food future, Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the reduction of GST rates on Soya Milk & other Plant-Based Milk Drinks, Texturised Vegetable Proteins, ( Soya Baris), Bari made of pulses from 12% and 18% to just 5%.

This progressive reform is not only about taxation — it is about shaping the way India eats, innovates, and grows in the years to come. By making plant-based alternatives more accessible and affordable, this decision directly supports public health, environmental sustainability, and economic opportunity.

This reform shows the government’s acknowledgment of the progressing plant based industry.

Why This Reform is a Game-Changer

Promoting Healthier Choices

India is witnessing a dietary shift as more consumers embrace plant-based foods for their health benefits. Lowering GST reduces costs for households, making protein-rich, dairy-free, and nutritious options more attainable for the wider population rather than remaining a niche lifestyle choice.

Driving Environmental Sustainability

Food systems are closely tied to climate change. By lowering taxes, the government is signaling strong support for eco-friendly alternatives that conserve water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lessen dependency on resource-intensive livestock farming. This aligns with India’s sustainability and climate goals.

Boosting the Plant-Based Economy

The earlier GST slabs of 12% and 18% were barriers to growth, particularly for the HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants, Catering) segment, where higher costs limited the adoption of plant-based options. With GST now reduced to 5%, restaurants and caterers can more easily include plant-based foods on their menus, helping these products reach the end consumer seamlessly. This reform will also unlock greater innovation, attract new investment, and encourage exports — positioning India as a leader in the global plant-based movement.

A Progressive Vision for India

This GST reform is more than just a tax cut. It reflects a forward-looking vision that recognizes the interconnectedness of health, environment, and economy.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman and the Government of India for recognizing the potential of this sector and taking a decisive step that empowers:

  • Consumers with healthier and more affordable options

  • Entrepreneurs with an enabling environment to innovate and grow

  • The Nation with sustainable pathways for economic and climate resilience

The Road Ahead

This reform is expected to:

  • Encourage greater investments in plant-based foods

  • Create new jobs across agriculture, food processing, retail, and logistics

  • Inspire consumer trust and adoption, making plant-based diets mainstream in India

It also sends a strong message internationally: India is ready to lead the global conversation on sustainable, plant-based food systems.

This is not just a fiscal change, but a cultural and economic milestone. As India takes this bold step, we move closer to building a future where healthier people, a sustainable planet, and a thriving economy go hand in hand.

This truly is a landmark step for Plant-Based India.
