JAIRAM RAMESH RALIES FOR VEGETARIANISM TO COMBAT GLOBAL WARMING

At a recent event at Kochi, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh made a really interesting comment with respect to global warming. He suggested that the best way to combat climate crisis is through a change in diet.

“If you want to do something for global warming, become a vegetarian. Because I think the beef industry has been a huge culprit in global warming.”

He put emphasis on the fact that the beef industry in particular has the biggest impact. Further he explains that it’s two fold.

Large amount of land is taken up for the beef industry to function.
Cattle emit methane, which deeply affects the air we breathe and can be very harmful to human health as well.

It is a well known fact that animal agriculture takes a huge toll on the planet, in terms of environment as well as land and water usage. By switching to a vegan diet, we save a lot. Food production accounts to about 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and animal agriculture accounts to most of it. (PCRM)

Mr. Ramesh went on to tell how he had previously mentioned this at international conferences as well, when he was the environment minister in 2009. He appealed to the whole world, and not just India, to consider switching to a vegetarian diet. In 2011, he also rallied for preserving forests and was also involved in banning the use of bulls as performing animals. He  put significant effort in 2016 during the Jallikattu ban too.

Veganism is the next step here, Mr. Ramesh. We hope to see you on the green side very soon.
