New Chicken 'Well Being' law to be passed by Indian Government

The center is planning to form stringent rules under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 for poultry farms in India. This comes on a recommendation by the Law Commission which said, "The representations brought to the Commission's notice of the unhygienic conditions of the poultry industry and the effect of battery-cage confinement on the well-being of the birds”, as stated in the Times of India.

These changes are a result of the global concern over the poor conditions of the Indian Poultry Industry which in turn is affecting the exports. The welfare of broiler chickens and egg-laying hens is only for profit motives and boosting the industry. If the new rules come into effect, these might improve the conditions of the poultry farms yet the fact that millions of chickens will still be killed and exploited for increasing the revenues shouldn’t be overlooked by the law-making authorities.

While this is a piece of bittersweet news, let's hope that the next step after this law passes, is that more poultry slaughterhouses and local shops will come under scrutiny.
