PETA Buys Stock In Starbucks In Effort To Get Rid Of Extra Charge For Plant Milk

These past few weeks, we’ve been highlighting how coffee and bakery chains are introducing plant milk in an effort to cater to increasing consumer demand.

While customers certainly are happy with the increase in plant milk options, one thing that doesn’t rest well is the extra charge that is levied for it.

Starbucks USA charges extra almost a dollar extra for almond milk – and PETA launched a petition to get Starbucks to scrap the fees. Now, PETA has taken it a step further by buying stock in Starbucks in an attempt to pressure the company and resolve the issue from the inside. (In India, Starbucks charges Rs. 25 extra for vegan almond milk.)

The logic is simple and clear – in a world where more people are ditching dairy for ethical and health reasons, it seems unfair to charge extra. The petition on PETA’s website states, “Starbucks should be encouraging customers to choose animal-friendly, vegan milks rather than cow's milk. Many other chains—including Tim Hortons, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Noah's New York Bagels, Philz Coffee, and Costa Coffee—already offer dairy-free milk at no extra charge.”

Vegan milks and plant dairy (like vegan cheese) are growing in India and across the world - do you think it's fair to charge extra? Let us know in the comments below.
