Skincare In The Time Of Beards

Beards, beards everywhere, not a clean-shaven man in sight – isn’t that so? It may seem like bearded men have it easy, since they don’t have to shave every morning – no shaving cuts or razor burn - just groom and go! Well, it isn’t quite as simple as that. There’s quite a lot of effort that goes into maintaining facial hair and skin – in fact, they go hand in hand. Here are a few skin care tips to keep your skin bright, and your beard smooth!

C-T-M, Men

The cleanse-tone-moisturize routine isn’t just for women – men need to be in on it too!

  • Cleansing twice a day is a must – it keeps your skin clean, removes dirt, grime and the built-up excess oil. This keeps blackheads & breakouts at bay.

  • Once you’re done with cleansing, it’s all about the tone! Toners work in different ways for different skin types – with oily skin, toners help control excess sebum production. For dry skin types, toners help hydrate. Toners also help soothe the skin after shaving.
  • And to keep your skin soft and smooth, moisturize! Moisturizer helps hydrate the skin and forms a protective layer to shield the skin from toxins and pollutants (yes, oily skin needs one too).

Scrub, Scrub, Scrub

Post-wash, pre-moisturizer, once a week, you’ve got to scrub it, man! This sloughs off dead skin, allowing healthier skin to form on the surface – and that’s why your skin looks brighter after a good scrub. Choose a gentle scrub one and watch that dullness & ingrown hair fade away.

Ban That Tan, Man

Sun damage is a serious problem – which is why you need to use sunscreen to protect your skin from it! Contrary to popular perception, harmful UV rays can harm your skin at any time, whether it’s bright or cloudy out. UVB rays may lessen during the colder months, but harmful UVA rays persist year-round, causing sunburn, wrinkles, sunspots, dry patches and even cancer. So boys, make sure you’re wearing a moisturizer with SPF in it!

Back Off, Beard Acne

Beard acne is more common than you think! It can be painful and often goes unaddressed. It’s natural for the skin under the beard to react because it often doesn’t get much attention. Beard acne is caused by the same bacteria that cause regular acne. Hair follicles collect dust, dirt and bacteria during the day, and this causes pimples.   How do you combat it? Not by shaving your beard off, but by giving your beard a little extra care.

  • Make sure you wash your beard twice a day and exfoliate it to take care of any ingrown hairs.
  • The grooming products you use – that beard oil, butter or setter – should be non-greasy and non-comedogenic. Don’t cultivate that beard at the cost of your skin!
