After the success of the 2014 documentary Cowspiracy, Kip Anderson's second film Seaspiracy is now on Netflix.

The documentary brings to light the impact of the fishing industry on oceans and aquatic life throughout the world. The director and narrator Ali Tabrizi travels through different regions, ranging from Scotland to Thailand, exploring the darker side of the industry. This includes human rights violations, illegal fishing, as well as the commercial fishing's role in accelerating climate change.

“This film will radically transform the way we think and act on ocean conservation forever,” stated the Seaspiracy team. “It’s time we focus our ecological and ethical concerns on our seas and its inhabitants. This is a new era for how we treat the most important habitat on earth.”

According to Seaspiracy, 90% of the world's large fish have been pushed towards endangerment due to fishing and 250,000 sea turtles are killed as by-catch by the industry in the U.S. alone. It also beings to light the real cause of plastic pollution in the world's oceans - fishing nets, which constitute 46% of the garbage in The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. These discarded nets are responsible for the deaths of 300,000 dolphins, whales and porpoises each year, and 30,000 sharks per hour.

The documentary also debunks the myth of 'sustainable fishing', revealing that the 'Dolphin Safe' label by the Earth Island Institute does not gaurantee what it claims to. When asked if the label is credible, a member of the Institute, Mark J Palmer, responds, “Once you’re out there in the ocean, how do you know what they’re doing? We have observers on board—observers can be bribed.”

In a 2006 study by Dr. Boris Worm, it was reported that oceans will be fishless in 2048 if the current state of industrial fishing continues.

Despite this report and the growing concerns regarding overfishing, the National Fishing Industry of the United States has been defensive about the documentary, labelling it as 'vegan propaganda' even before its release. In the documentary, it is also revealed that the fishing industry receives $35 billion each year as government subsidies, which is the same amount needed to solve world hunger, according to the United Nations.

Nevertheless, Seaspiracy has garnered international attention and is available to 190 million people to watch.

Documentaries have been instrumental in spreading awareness about the environmental impact of animal agriculture. Many such as The Game ChangersWhat The HealthDominion, and Earthlings have gathered millions of viewers, and even earned mentions by Indian celebrities such as Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli.
