Vegan and Eco-Activist Sowmya Reddy is an MLA in Bangalore

Great news for the Vegan community in India! Sowmya Reddy who is a candidate for Indian National Congress is the first outspoken vegan and environmental activist to be elected as MLA in an established constituency.

35-year-old Sowmya is a well-known animal rights and green activist, ushering her followers to choose a green and positive lifestyle with regards to diet and environment.

Bangalore Mirror reported that she hit the headlines during her marriage which was completely vegan. Her father, Ramalinga Reddy, a former minister, too had supported her decision. 

Her wedding was one of the largest eco-friendly weddings in India. It was attended by over 20,000 guests. All the leftovers were segregated and used as compost which resulted in zero-waste. 

Sowmya is the Founder of Paradigm Shift, a vegan restaurant, and an activist center in Whitefield, Bengaluru. It is a forum for public opinion and discussions in the true spirit of democracy.

Aside from that Sowmya has Spearheaded several tree plantation drives in Bengaluru, with the earliest one being 16 years ago in Madhavan Park, Jayanagar.

Another major accomplishment of hers is that she ensured that plastic bags were banned in Bengaluru City Corporation by working closely with BBMP officials, Resident Welfare Associations, elected representatives, and citizens.

We hope to hear more such wonderful implementations by Sowmya in the coming months and years. Let us wish that she will inspire other official candidates and party leaders to also go vegan and create a positive change in our environment.
