Wondering what to get your brother or sister this rakhi? Try vegan mithai from Vijay Sweets, Coimbatore!

That’s right. Vegan Indian mithai. It’s not an oxymoron – it’s delicious, it’s a reality and it’s all being done by Aravindan V out of his family-run sweet shop in Selvapuram, Coimbatore.

Take your pick from:

  • Vegan Mysore Pak (Rs 500/kg including shipping)
  • Cashew Halwa (Rs 400/kg including shipping)
  • Ragi Mylk Halwa (Rs 500/kg including shipping)
  • Wheat Mylk Halwa (Rs 500/kg including shipping)

Apart from these, they have ghee-free murukku and around 40 varieties of traditional namkeen on offer. Everything is 100% plant-based and tastes just as good (if not better!) than their dairy-filled counterparts.

Plant-Mylk Halwa

The ragi and wheat mylk halwas have been launched in time for the festive season and are made from plant-mylks which Aravindan and his team cold-press in-house. The wheat-mylk halwa also happens to be sugar-free, using jaggery as a sweetening agent.

Why Vegan?

Indian sweets are traditionally heavy on dairy. “Pure-ghee” is a common prefix on any box of mithai – but ghee is neither ethical nor necessary to make great-tasting mithai.

This is exactly what Aravindan set out to prove when he joined the family business. His family has been selling sweets and namkeen for 3 decades now, but when Aravindan took over, he wanted to do it the ethical way – which meant no milk and no ghee.

Why Vijay Sweets?

Aravindan uses plant-based mylks instead of ghee and milk – and for his first batch of vegan sweets, he spent 2 months in the kitchen formulating the perfect ratio to mimic the taste, texture and colour of ghee-laden mysore pak and halwa.

Vijay Sweets' vegan line was launched last Diwali with 2 items on the menu - vegan mysore pak and cashew halwa. In less than a year, Aravindan has made the business 100% vegan. Today, his kitchen uses ZERO animal products.
