Adidas India Rolls Out Vegan Sneakers To Tackle Plastic Waste

Plastic waste is one of our times' disturbing concerns and Adidas is doing something about it. The apparel brand has re-designed its sneakers to reduce its impact on the environment and launched a range of its classics shoes - Clean Classics, that are sustainable and vegan. Clean Classics include the brand's hugely popular shoes Superstar, Stan Smith, Continental 80 and Supercourt, all of which are remade for 2020. The new range of sneakers is surely challenging production conventions by using 70% recycled materials as well as renewable and reclaimed rubber.

While the company has taken a new pledge of responsibility to tackle plastic waste, the brand is not shying from telling its buyers that these new sustainable, vegan "shoes alone will not save the planet" - these words are seen in stylish handwriting on the new range of sneakers. That said, the brand has redesigned its classic sneakers ground-up to make  them sustainable and incorporated new initiatives to make the shoes environmental-friendly. Some of the initiatives it took are:

  • Reduce its use of virgin materials and impact on the environment.
  • Shoes are made with a series of high-performance recycled materials.
  • Sockliners are made of cork - a renewable material that is natural, recyclable and non-toxic.
  • Improved pattern efficiency by refining the way the patterns are cut to create shoes with minimal material waste.
  • Some shoes are made using algae-harvesting technology that helps to keep lakes clean and promotes clean water.
  • Laces are made of paper.

The Clean Classics collection was launched in India on 11 September 2020 and is available at Rs 8,999 across select Adidas Originals stores and on its Indian website.

Adidas's efforts to make shoes sustainable and free of animal leather is a commendable step in the right direction as the threat of climate change looms over us. And we hope that other global apparel brands take a leaf from the German brand's commitment to the planet.
