If you thought vegan food was inaccessible, we're here to change your mind. There is a restaurant that serves vegan food in a remote Ladakhi village on the Indo-Pak border, also known as 'the last village of India', Turtuk.

So now when you set off on a vacation to Leh-Ladakh, you simply cannot hope to miss ‘Balti Kitchen’. Set against the colourful landscape of Turtuk village in Nubra-Shayok valley is this family-owned eatery run by Raheem and Hajira, a husband-wife duo. If you’re curious about the establishment’s moniker, this restaurant dishes up authentic Balti cuisine that is well known for being healthy and made with sustainably sourced ingredients.

THE GLORIOUS AMBIANCE

Tourists would say that this eatery has the soothing vibe of old Manali with wooden furnishings.  But their stunning ambiance is accentuated by flowering bushes and hills in the distance. The Balti kitchen is framed by a sea of green and you’ll adore these fields of Buckwheat as you gobble up their buckwheat Kisir Samik served with herb pickle.

"So many people come and ask us for vegan food these days," says Hajira, "our menu has lots of options if you are vegan."

MOUTH-WATERING MENU HIGHLIGHTS

When you visit this place, you simply must order the buckwheat preparations from the menu for they use organically grown buckwheat from the fields around the restaurant. If you order their Praku which is essentially pasta prepared in a vegan walnut sauce, you shall marvel at the authenticity of their flavors.

When it comes to beverages, their fresh apricot juice comes highly recommended as does their Mulberry Juice. But if you’d like a safer bet, sip on their apple juice that’s made fresh on order. Their Moskot, Granthur and channe bhalle will please those with a more adventurous palate.

A SPECIAL MENTION

Be sure to enquire at the counter about locally grown produce that they sell such as apricots, shilajit and kernel oil and more. The amiable husband-wife duo tend to go out of their way to serve customers with a smile as they dish up organically grown vegan food.
