UNIQLO Bans Alpaca Wool

Japan-based fashion giant UNIQLO has just banned use of alpaca wool! UNIQLO joins Marks & Spencer and Esprit in banning alpaca fibre. This a welcome move for the alpacas as well as the planet. The Higg Materials Sustainability Index ranks alpaca wool as the second most environmentally damaging material after silk, noting that it’s six times as harmful as polyester and more than four times as damaging as modal, viscose, rayon, lyocell, acrylic, and other vegan materials. The company took the decision after PETA conducted an undercover investigation into the world’s largest privately owned alpaca farm in Mallkini in Peru and exposed the cruel treatment meted out to alpacas in the farm.

As a step in the right direction, Gap Inc (which owns Banana Republic, Athleta, and other brands) and H&M Group (which owns eight brands) have cut ties with the Michell Group that is the parent company of the world’s largest privately owned alpaca farm, Mallkini in Peru.
