The plant-based movement has seen increased traction in the past few years, evident in the launch of vegan-friendly products by conglomerates such as Unilever, as well as the recent partnership between PepsiCo and Beyond Meat.

And now, Nestle has announced the release of the first ever vegan version of its evergreen KitKat bar - KitKat V.

To be introduced in the market in late 2021, Nestle will initially test the demand for the dairy-free chocolate by launching it in multiple countries through certain retail stores and the KitKat Chocolatory.

The dairy-free KitKat has been developed in York, UK by Nestle’s experts with an aim to live up to the reputation of the original KitKat.

"Taste was a key factor when developing the plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat,” shares Louise Barrett, the Head of the Nestlé Confectionery Product Technology Center in York. “We used our expertise in ingredients, together with a test and learn approach, to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat."

Nestle has not yet revealed the ingredients of KitKat V but claims the chocolate is certified vegan and made with sustainable cocoa.

Alexander von Maillot, the Head of Confectionery at Nestlé, shared the story behind the new vegan launch, saying, “One of the most common requests we see on social media is for a vegan KitKat, so we’re delighted to be able to make that wish come true. I can’t wait for people to be able to try this amazingly tasty new KitKat. This is a product for everyone who wants a little more plant-based in their life!”

This isn’t Nestle’s first plant-based launch as the company has already released certain dairy-free milk alternatives and coffee creamers, a plant-based condensed milk alternative, plant-based ice cream, dairy-free cheese alternatives as well as a plant-based burger.

"There is a quiet food revolution underway that is changing how people eat. We want to be at the forefront of that, championing the discovery of plant-based food and beverages. What better way to do that than offering a vegan version of one of our most famous and much-loved brands? The new KitKat V means chocolate lovers now have a great plant-based option when they have a break," added Alexander von Maillot.
