Have you ever tasted vegan tuna? If not, here’s a catch. A newly found start-up, BettaF!sh, is set to roll out plant-based tuna across 4000 Aldi supermarkets in Germany.  This will stand to mark as one of the largest initial launches of vegan food in the country. BettaF!sh is launching the sandwiches in three different flavors. These 100% plant-based tuna sandwiches are made from seaweed and legumes.

BettaF!sh’s 100% plant-based-tuna is not only good for the environment but is also healthier. Unlike many other plant-based food products, these do not contain soy but instead are made using legumes. The fava beans are sourced from northern France, while the seaweed is from Ireland and Norway.

Commercial fishing across the world has put nearly 43% of fish species at risk. This aims to curb commercial fishing and is good for health as it does not contain methylcellulose, artificial flavoring, or yeast extract. With all these, the product still delivers the same texture and fishy taste that people love about Tuna.

Aldi’s 100% vegan tuna sandwich made from Bettaf!sh’s plant-based tuna called TU-NAH, will have three flavors; Sweet Corn and Pepper, Classic, and Sweet Chilli. TU-NAH will be launched in two of the stores -  Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd by next week before launching it nationwide across its 4000 outlets in Germany.

Bettaf!sh - better not just for the planet but for your health too!

The founders of Bettaf!sh say that they want to revolutionize the way seafood is looked at. They want to replace conventional seafood with seaweed. It can change the face of fishing in and around Europe as seaweed can easily be grown and become an alternative business for fishing. This way, the fishing communities are not disturbed as well.

Growing seaweed will restore ecological balance and supports marine life, and unlike other greens, this does not need any fertilizers or pesticides to grow. This means creating sustainable and healthier seafood options without having to harm the environment.

“We are extremely proud to point out that our BettaF!sh products have a significant positive impact. By purchasing just one TU-NAH sandwich, the consumer makes an active contribution to reducing bycatch, CO2 emissions and overfishing”, shared co-founder Jacob von Manteuffel.

While the start-up is all set to grow and explore, what’s in their pipeline is still a question. However, they have shared that consumers can expect more tuna analogs that will be rolled out through various food channels in Germany.

The whooping Market for alternate seafood

Monkeys By The Sea, a Dutch company, is all set to explore the vegan seafood market in other news. They have launched with a pre-seed of $50,000 to support its microalgae-powered vegan tuna and breaded fish alternatives that are in the pipeline for the debut.

Other companies creating a buzz in the plant-based seafood market include Sweden’s Hooked Foods that has launched plant-based shredded salmon, Sophie’s Kitchen that produces alt-seafood products.
